The improvements for this property consist of passive open space on the May River at the southeastern end of Calhoun Street. The plan over the next few years is to open the property for public use and implement improvements according to the approved Master Plan. The project includes natural gardens, grass, walkways, parking, site furnishings, lighting, bulkhead, fencing, restroom building and public access to the May River. The Town and Beaufort County will each have 50% ownership.
In accordance with Chapter 10 of the Comprehensive Plan, the Town of Bluffton partnered with Beaufort County, to jointly pursue this project which will benefit Bluffton, as well as Southern Beaufort County as a whole.
The property consists of the Antebellum Structure Squire Pope Carriage House, built circa 1850, on 1.27 acres and 188 feet of water frontage. The improvements for this property consist of passive open space on the May River, natural gardens and river access. In addition, the rehabilitation and preservation of the structure will conform to Historic Preservation Commission guidelines.
The Comprehensive Plan also envisions the provision of cultural resources which may serve as venues for cultural events; the expansion and improvement of public parks, preservation of open space and access to the May River for residents and visitors alike.
To date the Town has performed an initial site clean-up and installation of fencing for safety purposes. In FY 2019 the Town will develop and approve a Master Plan for the entire park, complete design and construction of the bulkhead, upland park improvements and a crabbing dock.
