Applicants sought for appointed committees

Bluffton Town Council is seeking qualified applicants for appointment to its boards, commissions and committees. 

The most immediate need for new appointees exists for:

    Affordable Housing Committee – (1) position open for a realtor

    Beautification - (2) positions open for town residents, property owners or business owners

    Board of Zoning Appeals – (1) position open for a town resident, property owner or business owner

    May River Watershed Action Plan Advisory Committee – (1) at-large position

    Municipal Election Commission – (1) position open for a registered, Town of Bluffton voter 

    Planning Commission – (2) positions open for town residents, property owners or business owners

The Town welcomes applications for all boards, committees and commissions regardless of current vacancies.  Though qualifications for appointment may vary for each board, committee or commission, most appointments require residency within the Town of Bluffton. Applications are kept on file for two years due to unexpected vacancies which occur throughout the year. Applicants will be considered for any vacancies for which the applicant may qualify that occur during the time their application is on file.

Descriptions and requirements for each committee which currently have vacancies are also below.  

Affordable Housing Committee 

The seven (7) member Affordable Housing Committee is tasked with assisting and advising Town Council on the establishment of affordable housing criteria for Town sponsored affordable housing development projects and initiatives as well as defining the Town's affordable housing goals, guidelines, and policies, and funding mechanisms per the Committee's establishment by a majority vote of Town Council on January 12, 2010 and Town Council Resolution adopted on August 11, 2015 establishing the Charter (PDF) for the Committee.

Beautification Committee

The five (5) member Beautification Committee which is tasked with assisting and advising Town Council with the adoption, periodic review, and implementation of the Town of Bluffton Beautification Master Plan, furthering intergovernmental and private sector relationships and initiatives for beautification, and maintaining the criteria necessary for Tree City USA designation per the Town Council Resolution adopted on July 17, 2012, and last revised on February 19, 2013, establishing the Committee. The Beautification Committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at 10:00 a.m.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The five (5) member Board of Zoning Appeals is required for the determination of appeals from administrative decisions of the Unified Development Ordinance Administrator on matters pertaining to zoning and granting or denying applications for variances or special exceptions per the South Carolina Local Government Comprehensive Planning Enabling Act of 1994, Section 6-29-780(A). The Board of Zoning Appeals meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

May River Watershed Action Plan Advisory Committee

The seven (7) member May River Watershed Action Plan Advisory Committee is tasked with assisting and advising Town Council by offering guidance and recommendations to implement the opportunities and strategies outlined in the May River Watershed Action Plan per the Town Council Resolution adopted on May 8, 2012 establishing the Committee. Meetings of the May River Watershed Action Plan Advisory. Committee meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month. Meetings are held at 9 a.m.

Municipal Election Commission

The three (3) member Municipal Election Commission is required to conduct, supervise and manage municipal, special, and general elections, certify election results, and hear any protests arising from the election per the South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 5-15-90(A). Meetings of the Municipal Election Commission are scheduled, as necessary.

Planning Commission

The seven (7) member Planning Commission is required to draft, review, and propose amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Ordinance, approve or deny applications related to land development and street naming/renaming, review and make recommendations for proposed annexations or zoning map amendments, propose policies and procedures to facilitate the implementation of the Town's planning efforts, propose an annual Capital Improvements Program, and determine appeals from administrative decisions of the Unified Development Ordinance Administrator in the administration of land development regulations per the South Carolina Local Government Comprehensive Planning Enabling Act of 1994, Section 6-29-780(A). The Planning Commission meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
