Bluffton Police Chief Stephenie Price is implementing leadership training for the department’s leadership staff, presenting military, state, law enforcement and industry leaders.
“Leadership principles are universal and there’s no better way to teach these principles than experience,” Price said, “Inspired leadership often comes from those whom have walked the path, negotiated challenges and have been battle-tested. These speakers offer a wealth of experience and examples which can be applied to everyone’s life and profession.”
The first speaker, Brigadier General Julie L Nethercot, presented to the department in early March. Nethercot is the commanding general of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and the Eastern Recruiting Region.
“I am so grateful for the General’s compelling presentation about how to make leadership a way of life in your career as well as in personal experiences,” Price said. “Brigadier General Nethercot is leadership personified and hearing those principles applied in another industry, from a voice outside your department, is very impactful.”
The next speaker, scheduled for May 12, is Lewis “Jackie” Swindler, director of South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Swindler, with more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement, has held numerous leadership positions including: chief of police for Newberry, SC, past president of the South Carolina Police Chiefs’ Association and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association also awarded him the inaugural Jackie Swindler Award for Ethics and Professionalism in Law Enforcement in 2013.
“Jackie Swindler is among the state’s top leaders in law enforcement and I am honored he has accepted the department’s invitation to speak about how to make decisions infused with the highest standards of law enforcement,” Price said. “Professional development comes naturally when officers know leaders care and are bound to the principles which they teach. This profession comes with challenges, crises and conflicts and I hope to quip each person in my department with the internal and external tools they need to provide Bluffton with public safety leadership.”
Price will announce more speakers as they are confirmed.
