SCAM ALERT: Be in the know about the latest phone scam

The Bluffton Police Department has received several calls from residents reporting an unknown person calling, claiming to be an officer with the Bluffton Police Department. Once on the phone, the unknown caller says the victim missed Grand Jury and now has active warrants out for their arrest. The unknown caller, posing as an officer, will then advise the victim to pay a fine, which is usually around $400 to avoid jail time. The victim is then directed to purchase "Green Dot" cards. Once the cards are purchased, the information is given to the unknown caller so they can collect the funds. This scam has been around for a while and is nearly impossible to track back to the actual unknown caller; the suspect. In the end, victims are left out of money with no recourse.

Don’t fall pray to scammers! Report scams to the Bluffton Police Department by calling 843-706-4500.
