How Do You REALLY Run a Small Business? You’ve Launched Your Company. Now What?

There are millions of books, magazines, articles and websites that teach you how to start a small business. You can learn how to get started, write a business plan, market your product or service, create social media campaigns - you name it.

Once you’ve launched your business though, it’s not as easy to find that same level of “how to” information when it comes to actually running your business.  However, what you do in the months and years following launching your business is equally, if not more, critical in the success of your company.  This is why most early stage business owners are often the ones who benefit most from the mentorship, guidance and resources provided by those who have “been there” and “done that” when it comes to taking their business to the next levels.

If you own a small business, you most likely started it because you were good at something the business does. Maybe you turned a hobby into a business, maybe you worked for someone else doing something you enjoyed and decided to do it for yourself. Maybe you were a “technician” who decided to turn that technical skill into a business.

But…the skills that suit you as a technician may not translate well into the OTHER people you need to become to run the business. What other people? There are actually quite a few – and a number of key roles you’ll need to take on (and hats to wear!)  For starters, you’ll need to also be a Manager: the person who keeps the lights on, the employees happy and the floors clean. You’ll also need to be an Entrepreneur:  the person who thinks about the future and what the business needs to be next. To be an entrepreneur you need time to think, to dream, to envision. But since you are also a technician and a manager, when do you have that time?

What is the key to being able to take on multiple roles (all of equal importance) in running, and growing your business? Spend more time working ON your business rather than IN your business. The way to do that is to create procedures or a “system” that can put a lot of the daily decisions on autopilot so you don’t have to handle every decision and every emergency. In short, the key to RUNNING a successful business is to create a SYSTEM to run the business and hire PEOPLE to run that system.
