Wharf Street Redevelopment Project
The Town of Bluffton is continually investing in the Old Town Bluffton Historic District to create affordable housing opportunities in close proximity to jobs, parks, churches and other community resources. The Wharf Street Redevelopment Project is one example of this effort and included the demolition of two vacant structures and the construction of six affordable green cottages on approximately 1/2 acre. Funding for the Wharf Street Redevelopment Project was provided by the Neighborhood Stabilization Grant administered by the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority, a HOME Grant administered by the Lowcountry Council of Governments and the Town of Bluffton as well as many community donations and volunteer participation. The 6th and final home of the Wharf Street Redevelopment Project was sold in 2014 to an income qualified homebuyer allowing the Town to designate the expenditure of proceeds from the home sales for affordable housing initiatives as well as closeout the Neighborhood Stabilization Grant.
The Wharf Street Redevelopment Project received Southern Living's Best Community Revitalization Award in July 2014 for the Town's ingenuity to provide beautiful, smart affordable housing in the heart of the Lowcountry.
